Daisy Jones and The Six

Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you love tumultuous love stories, empowering women, or even the music of Fleetwood Mac, who heavily inspired the author in this particular novel, then Daisy Jones and the Six should go right to the top of your to-read list.

Released in March 2019, this book quickly became a firm BookTok favourite on TikTok. This historical fiction novel transports readers back to the vibrant rock and roll scene of the 70s, focusing on a fictional band’s meteoric rise and dramatic fall. The book has perfectly imperfect protagonists, an array of complex secondary characters, all with demons of their own, and just the right amount of mystery, making sure this novel lives up to the hype it has garnered since its release.

Fans of books like Emma Brodie’s Songs in Ursa Major and Jenna Voris’ Every Time You Hear That Song, are sure to fall in love with this charmingly 70s and emotionally deep title.  Read on to find out more about Daisy Jones and The Six and the author behind the hit.

“Reid (The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo) delivers a stunning story of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll in the 1960s and ’70s in this expertly wrought novel”

- Publishers Weekly

Told from the perspective of an initially unknown narrator, Daisy Jones and The Six sees this character dive deep into the titular musician’s history, examining how the band could have broken up when they were at their most popular. The book reads like a celebrity memoir, with the narrator examining video interviews of the band and their family and friends, transcripts of interviews, as well as books written about them too, giving the novel an authentic, documentary-type feel

We loved discovering more about the electric characters and the relationship between Daisy and Billy as we pieced together their connection from different sources and perspectives. The narrative style is fairly innovative, and we enjoyed it as a point of difference, but it could perhaps take a minute to get used to for some readers. We also found the reveal of the narrator’s identity to be both satisfying and entertaining, something which can be difficult for some novels. Overall, we thought it was a hit.

“I’m fascinated by the people we make famous, and I’m drawn to the difference between what something looks like on the outside versus what it was like to live”

- Taylor Jenkins Reid, The Guardian
