Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

Gabrielle Zevin

Have you ever read a book that makes you feel like you’re running a marathon in all the right ways? If not, you need to get yourself a copy of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.  This 2022 novel from Gabrielle Zevin has well and truly changed the game when it comes to fiction about gaming — and, to a certain extent, the fiction genre in general.

Zevin’s novel is vast in its scope, spanning 30 years as it follows the creative collaborations of Sam Masur/Mazer and Sadie Green. While this novel seems like it would be perfect for video game fanatics — Sam and Sadie are video game producers — the story has something for everyone, and will leave you sad to part with the characters when you turn the final page.

An immediate hit, in the year it was published Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow was a New York Times Best Seller, an IndieBound best seller, and an Apple Books best seller. Save some for the rest of us, Zevin!

Flying off the shelves, Zevin’s story has been an absolute must-read, even being ranked 76th in the New York Times’ 2024 ‘100 Best Books of the 21st Century’. You can’t get much better than that.

“It's a big, beautifully written novel about an underexplored topic, that succeeds in being both serious art and immersive entertainment.”

- Maureen Corrigan, NPR

Now that we’ve covered the novel’s impressive critical reception let’s tell you what we think.  You won’t be surprised to hear that, at Victoria Freudenheim, we’ve been obsessed with this book since it came out. From its lovable characters and complex ethical questions to its intellectual prowess, so many literary ingredients have gone into making this a top-ranking book.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a story about what happens when friends collaborate and create together; it’s about the process of creation, rivalries, fame, and — above all — despite its continual references to digital reality, it’s about being human.

Though, for all its humour, richness, and beautiful portrayals of the unifying power of friendship, Zevin’s novel packs a hard punch in terms of its emotional intensity. This book is definitely not one for sensitive souls, with pain, trauma, heartbreak, and tragedy at every turn. Littering its pages is a collection of unfortunate events that weave together to shroud this story in a tapestry of tragedy — and yet we can’t help but keep reading.

“I haven’t wept as long and as hard at any piece of media in recent memory”

- Alex Gunderson, Paste Magazine

If you’re still not convinced that you need to read this book, we’re not sure what to tell you — other than a film version is coming soon! In 2021 (that’s right, before it was even published), Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment purchased the film rights for $2 million, planning to produce the movie with Zevin’s assistance on production and script writing. While it might still be a bit early to grab your popcorn yet, you’ll want to be first in line the day that this novel hits the big screen.

  • The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry (2014)
  • Young Jane Young (2017)
