Our Mission

To say we’re passionate about books is an understatement. Here at Victoria Freudenheim, we’ve always believed in the transformative power of reading and strive to share our knowledge and appreciation of literature — contemporary and classic — with as many empowered readers as possible.

We understand the inherent value in a good book and, as book critics, have taken it upon ourselves to share the pleasures of reading with as wide an audience as possible. One of our core beliefs is that everyone can be a literary critic — irrespective of how wide-read they are.

So, in regularly reviewing books and sharing our opinions, we hope to inspire as many readers as possible to do the same and develop and share their own literary tastes. It all starts with a book.

Reviewing books: The what, how & why

So, how exactly do we review our books? And, more importantly, what types of books do we choose to review?

What types of genres do we review?

As a famous book critic, we leave no stone unturned when it comes to genre, reviewing everything from classic novels and poetry to contemporary drama and biographies

You can find our current list of genres in the drop-down menu on our home page. At the moment, we have Biography, Crime, Drama, Thriller, and New Releases. But, we are constantly adding to this assortment. Let us know what you would like to see more of over on our Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

How do we review our books?

For us, transparency and honesty are key. While all our book reviews are ultimately founded upon the opinion of the reader, we aim to remain as neutral and open-minded as possible — even in our top-rated reviews — conveying a true sense of what the book is like to our own readers.

With every book we encounter, we read deeply, taking our time to really get a feel for the storyline, noting down things of interest as we go. Whilst reading, we keep an eye out for multiple indicators of a book’s quality, including (but not limited to) the following things:

  • The plot, its complexity, and how engaging it is
  • The book’s deeper messaging and any hidden meanings
  • The socio-political contexts of the book
  • The author’s own story
  • The book’s critical acclaim and wider public reception
  • The characters and how realistic, likeable, and vivid they are
  • The general quality of the writing
  • How innovative the book feels: Is it doing something no one else has?
  • And much more.

Why book reviews? Where did the idea come from?

Everyone has to start somewhere. So, like a good book, let’s start at the beginning

Our founder, Victoria Freudenhiem, always loved books. Like many children, she grew up with a passion for literature and was surrounded by books from a young age. After studying literature and journalism at University, Victoria has begun a prolific career in the publishing industry, while consuming and reviewing literature for fun in her free time.

Eventually, her passion for discussing literature took over and Victoria decided to embark on a new career path — one that would allow her to facilitate conversations about fiction and non-fiction for years to come. In creating Victoria Freudenheim Book Reviews, it was hoped that a (digital) space could be carved out for book lovers everywhere to gather and discuss good literature.

And it’s as simple as that.
